Digital Graffiti Announces 2019 Call for Entries

The Alys Foundation is pleased to announce the call for entries for the 12th Annual Digital Graffiti Festival at Alys Beach, that will be held May 17-18, 2019. Artists around the world are invited to submit original works of digital art to be showcased in the annual juried festival. The 2019 awards will include Best of Show ($5,000 prize), Curator’s Choice ($2,000 prize) and three Special Recognition honors (at $1,000 prize each), selected by the festival’s longtime curator Brett Phares and esteemed panel of judges. The deadline to submit is February 1st, 2019 at 12AM.

Showcased against the elegant white walls of Alys Beach, Digital Graffiti provides a large-scale blank canvas for artists to explore the visual intersection of art and architecture while also creating entirely new art forms. Once darkness falls in the coastal town along scenic Highway 30A, the iconic walls of Alys Beach’s homes glow with vibrant original art projections providing an immersive, one-of-a-kind experience.

Artists, designers, photographers, and architects are invited to submit their artwork to be projected under the night sky and onto the pristine, reflective white walls of Alys Beach. Both evenings of the festival will feature the town illuminated with stunning examples of projection mapping, generative art, experimental short films and animation, and sound, motion, and light responsive installations.

Interested artists are welcome to submit their work here, with a deadline to submit by February 1, 2019 at 12AM. For more information about the festival, please visit digitalgraffiti.com.

Florida Green Building Coalition bestows “Platinum” award to multiple Lucian residences

The Florida Green Building Coalition, FGBC, has awarded eight Alys Beach condominium residences, located within the property’s mixed-use building The Lucian, recipients of the Platinum certification.

Designed by Khoury & Vogt Architects, four of the eight condominiums, Lucian Units # 201, 202, 203, and 301 were named Finalists in FGBC’s Highest Scoring Green Multi-Family award category, with Lucian Unit #202’s 230 Platinum score earning Florida Green Building Coalition’s top 2017 multi-family score, and Alys Beach Lucian Development LLL acclaimed as FGBC’s 2017 Multi-Family Builder of the Year.

“Since the founding of Alys Beach in 2004, we’ve made it a priority to build homes that not only can withstand the Gulf weather conditions, but are also responsibly made,” Marieanne Khoury-Vogt, of Khoury & Vogt Architects, says. “The Lucian condominiums follow those same high standards for construction, and this recognition from the Florida Green Building Coalition underscores that commitment.”

In order to obtain residential green certification from the coalition, architects and builders must reach beyond the standard minimum requirements. The Florida Green Building Coalition uses independent third-party experts to review and evaluate a home’s design and construction in critical areas such as energy performance, water conservation, site conditions, healthy home environment, materials, and disaster mitigation.

Winners were announced at the annual Florida Green Building Coalition’s Awards Luncheon held in downtown Orlando on March 23, 2018.

Florida Trend Magazine Showcases Sustainable Communities in the State

Florida Trend magazine recently highlighted Alys Beach as the first community in the state to be certified LEED green by the Florida Green Building Coalition. The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system evaluates buildings based on their environmental impacts and encourages sustainability efforts. Developments pursuing LEED certification earn points for incorporating sustainable elements into their projects, including energy-efficient lights, solar panels, and native landscaping.

The article cites:

“Alys Beach, a master-planned beachfront community in the Panhandle, features buildings with white roofs and walls to reflect heat from the sun. Cobblestone streets allow rainwater to naturally filter into the soil below, reducing problems associated with runoff. Native plants are used to minimize the need for water, fertilizer and pesticides.

Although construction on the first houses in Alys began in 2004, the development was slow to take off because of a spate of hurricanes, the recession and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Today, the community includes 125 residences and 18,000 square feet of commercial space.

Developer EBSCO, based in Birmingham, Ala., requires all homes to be certified as green by the FGBC, making Alys the first community in Florida to do so. Among the homes’ green features are spray foam insulation to reduce air leakage and energy- and water-efficient appliances.”

Alys Beach Announces New State-Of-The-Art Fitness Center

A Birmingham, AL-based architecture firm designs luxury community amenity, scheduled to open fall 2018

Alys Beach announces the addition of a highly anticipated design project in the community, the Fitness Center. Designed by Nequette Architecture & Design, a Birmingham, AL-based architecture firm, the Fitness Center at Alys Beach encompasses an expansive 15,000 square feet, and it is scheduled to be completed in Fall 2018.

The design of the Fitness Center at Alys Beach was inspired by the peaceful location with a strong focus on natural light in every room of the building. Surrounding courtyards will be visible to the Fitness Center visitors through large glass framing. Every detail of the Fitness Center was designed with the community in mind to not just be a gym, but a gathering place for all individuals.

“From the street corner, you will enter the fitness center through a carved timber screen wall into a forecourt garden that is designed to calm and decompress you as you arrive,” says Louis Nequette, Lead Principle of Nequette Architecture & Design.

Once inside the lobby, guests will be able to view the inner courtyard, which is framed by several main functions: the lift room, a glass-like box consisting of strength training on the first floor and cardio on the second floor with an outdoor terrace fitness classroom; an indoor-outdoor covered pool with supporting lockers and treatment rooms; the recovery room with group exercise, yoga, and meditation area with its own outdoor court; the movement room featuring TRX and spin bikes, and the tennis court area.

“Fitness is such an important part of our homeowners’ daily lives, and the Fitness Center at Alys Beach will be one of the most impactful developments for our town,” Vice President of Sales Tom Dodson says. “Alys Beach is excited and pleased to move forward with the construction of this long-awaited amenity.”

Located at the corner of North Castle Harbour Drive and Nonesuch Way, the Fitness Center will feature top-of-the-line equipment, an indoor recreational pool, a steam room, and massage therapy. Guests will also be able to participate in a variety of fitness classes including yoga, spin, and suspension training.
